Abstract

Background: Dental caries is common among adolescents with diabetes due to inadequate functional dietary patterns combined with poor oral hygiene, which interferes with adequate oral health.

Objective: To describe knowledge and practices regarding functional dietary patterns among adolescents with type 1 diabetes for dental caries prevention.

Methodology: A descriptive case study was conducted on 12 type 1 diabetic adolescents aged 15 to 18 years belonging to the Sancti Spíritus José Martí Pérez Provincial Teaching Pediatric Hospital , in the period from February to September 2025. The level of knowledge and practices associated with a functional dietary pattern for the prevention of dental caries was described. Theoretical, empirical, and statistical methods were used.

Results: The presence of cariogenic diet and dental plaque predominated in 75% and 66.6% of adolescents. The level of knowledge regarding functional food diets in relation to dental caries was unfavorable (83.3%). Practices related to the frequency and quantity of functional food intake was unfavorable (66.6%). 58.3% performed inadequate tooth brushing practices. 50% of the adolescents presented poor oral hygiene. The prevalence of dental caries was high.

Conclusions: The majority of adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus presented an incorrect functional dietary pattern in relation to dental caries.
