Abstract

Background: Sarcopenia deteriorates physical performance, muscle strength and affects both the quality and quantity of muscle.

Objective: To estimate the predictive factors of sarcopenia secondary to cancer in the surgical patient.

Methodology: Retrospective analytical study of cases and control in oncologic patients intervened at “María Curie” Camagüey Provincial Oncology Teaching Hospital, from January 2019 to December 2022. The universe consisted of 339 patients and the sample was 200 patients. The sample was divided into two groups: a control group consisting of patients who did not present sarcopenia and a study group of diagnosed sarcopenic patients. A binary logistic regression model was estimated using the forward Wald method.

Results: The male sex represented 64.5 % and patients with 60 years of age and over 69.5 %. The model estimated a global percentage of 87.5 % in respect to the observed values, with 87 % of sensitivity and 88 % of specificity. From the regression coefficients of the variables: chair stand test, calf circumference and balance, the equation was constructed.

Conclusions: The estimated predictors of sarcopenia secondary to cancer in the surgical patient were: chair stand test, calf circumference, and balance.
