Abstract

Background: Oral cancer in any of its variants and locations constitutes a health problem today. It is important to appreciate that adolescents should know about oral cancer, what attitudes they take towards such disease and its risk factors, in order to establish work strategies that allow increasing their knowledge, attitudes and practices, and consequently the prevention of the disease.

Objective: To describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices of adolescents related to oral cancer prevention.

Methodology: An observational descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted; the population consisted of 537 adolescents from the Honorato del Castillo Pre-University Institute belonging to the Sancti Spíritus municipality; The probabilistic sample consisted of 34 adolescents, following informed consent. The variables used were knowledge, attitudes and practices related to oral cancer prevention. Methods from the theoretical and empirical levels were used, as well as qualitative techniques.

Results: Low knowledge about oral cancer predominated (50%), unfavorable attitudes in adolescents regarding prevention related to oral cancer in 47%, and 55.9% of adolescents performed unfavorable practices.

Conclusions: The majority of adolescents present low levels of knowledge, unfavorable attitudes and practices regarding oral cancer prevention.
