Periodontitis characterization in patients with a diagnosis of ischemic heart disease

Abstract

Background: Periodontal and cardiovascular diseases are common inflammatory conditions whose relationship has been studied in different contexts.

Objective: To characterize periodontitis according to the presence and severity of chronic immunoinflammatory periodontal disease in patients diagnosed with ischemic heart disease in two polyclinics in Havana.

Methodology: The research was conducted in the period between November 2023 and November 2024; it took place at the polyclinics Elpidio Berovides and Aleida Fernández, as well as the Clinic of Stomatology Elpidio Berovides. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, which included 41 patients diagnosed with ischemic heart disease.

Results: From the frequency distribution analysis of periodontitis stages by age group, it was found that the groups aged 60 to 69 years and 70 to 79 years are the most predominant, likewise, stage II predominates in both groups, as well as myocardial infarction.

Conclusions: The characterization conducted demonstrates the presence of periodontitis in patients diagnosed with ischemic heart disease therefore, it is necessary to maintain the integration of Periodontology and Cardiology consultations with the aim of improving the course of both diseases and consequently the life quality life.
