Monitoring of body composition in Cuban farmers from Yaguajay, Sancti Spíritus. 2017-2023

Abstract

Background: In rural communities, it is important to monitor body composition because the work performed by their inhabitants generally requires high energy expenditure.

Objective: To compare body composition in Cuban farmers from Yaguajay municipality, Sancti Spíritus province, in the period between 2017 and 2023.

Methodology: A descriptive study was conducted in 15 farmers of Yaguajay municipality. Arm circumference and triceps fold were measured to calculate fat and muscle area of arm in 2017 and 2018, which were contrasted with the Student t test. Triceps, biceps, subscapular, and suprailiac skinfolds were measured in 2017, 2018, and 2023, according to the Airlie anthropometric convention techniques, to estimate body composition, and comparisons were made with the Friedman test. The significance level used was p<0.05.

Results: In both estimation adequate nutrition predominated according to the muscle and fat area of the arm. Skinfolds and adiposity decreased in 2018 compared to 2017, and in 2023 there was an increase in total body adiposity.

Conclusions: Changes in body composition were evident over time, consistent with the increasing age of the subjects and the changes in lifestyles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
