Abstract

Background: Vesicular adenomyomatosis is an acquired degenerative disease that is characterized by epithelial proliferation with hypertrophy of the muscular layer and formation of fistulous tracts, known as Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses. It is considered a benign and rare condition, generally diagnosed after the age of 50, with a higher incidence in women.

Objective: To present a case with a diagnosis of a low-incidence and uncommon disease in older male adults.

Case presentation: Elderly male patient with recurrent biliary pain due to lithiasis, with an ultrasonographic finding of a gallbladder polyp. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed with a pathological diagnosis of gallbladder adenomyomatosis.

Conclusions: The clinical and histopathological presentation of gallbladder adenomyomatosis was described in a cholecystectomized patient, with lithiasis and polyp identified by ultrasound. It is a rare disease, diagnosed between 50 and 60 years of age, with a predominance of the female sex, and has been characterized by being diagnosed incidentally. The case presented constitutes one of the reports of male patients, older adults, diagnosed and operated on due to this disease.
