Una batalla contra el VIH sida y por la vida

La epidemia de virus de inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) - sida ha cobrado desde sus inicios la vida de millones de personas sin distinción de raza, sexo, edad, posición económica. La introducción en la década del 90 de la terapia antiretroviral (TARV) logró revertir esta situación evitando 2,5 millones de muertes.
Cuba en el contexto americano, tiene una prevalencia del 0,1 % y es uno de los países junto a Croacia y Eslovaquia que han logrado el acceso a la TARV a más del 80 % de la población infectada, lo que es reconocido internacionalmente por los organismos de las Naciones Unidas; teniendo en cuenta que este tratamiento en Cuba se le garantiza al 100 % de los pacientes con VIH-sida.
Gracias a la cooperación del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD) se ha logrado disponer de un financiamiento para la atención descentralizada a estos pacientes, lo que ha implicado que el seguimiento de ellos sea cercano a su localidad; financiamiento que propicia en Cuba el programa de atención descentralizada que en agosto del 2009 y mayo del 2010 permitió que se abrieran en el Hospital General Provincial de Sancti Spíritus sendos laboratorios de citometría de flujo y carga viral, respectivamente para atender a los pacientes de la región central del país, lo que unido a las consultas multidisciplinarias existentes han revitalizado el trabajo.
La 1ra Jornada Regional de Atención Secundaria de personas con VIH-sida celebrada en julio de 2012 en Sancti Spíritus, permitió a los especialistas confrontar criterios, asumir posiciones, trazar metas de investigación científica. Se expusieron temas como la aparición de enfermedades oportunistas (tuberculosis, criptococosis), el estigma hacia este tipo de paciente, los parámetros actuales para guiar la TARV, estado de salud bucal en pacientes seropositivos, entre otros. De ellos se publicó una muestra representativa en este suplemento de la revista electrónica Gaceta Médica Espirituana.

Sirva este medio como una forma más de divulgar el quehacer científico de los que día a día se esmeran en la noble pero ardua batalla de ganarle la carrera a este virus asumiendo el deber con cada paciente: preservar su vida.

A struggle against HIV-AIDS and for life.

The HIV-AIDS virus has cost the lives of millions of persons without distinctions of race, gender, age, or economical status. The introduction in the 90´s of the antiretroviral therapy (ARVT) managed to revert this situation by avoiding 2, 5 million deaths.
Cuba, in the Latin American context, has a prevalence of 0, 1 % and it is one of the countries together with Croatia and Slovakia that have manage the access to ARVT to more than the 80 % of the infected population which is worldwide recognized by the U. N taking into account that this treatment in Cuba is warranted to the 100 % of HIV-AIDS patients.
Thanks to the cooperation of the U.N Program for Development (UNPD) it has been possible to obtain the financing for the decentralized care to these patients which has implied that their follow-up is close to their locations; this financing provides in Cuba the program of decentralized care that in August 2009 and May 2010 made possible the opening of two cytrometry laboratories of viral flux and change in the Provincial General Hospital in Sancti Spíritus, in order to give care to the patients of the central area of the country which along with the existing multidisciplinary consultations have revitalized the work.
The 1st Journey Regional Event of Secondary Care of HIV-AIDS patients helped in July, 2012 in Sancti Spíritus allowed the specialists to confront criteria, assume attitudes and establish goals of scientific research. Topics such as the appearance of opportunistic diseases (tuberculosis, cryptococosis) were exposed as well as the stigmatization of this type of patient, the present parameters to guide the ARVT oral health status in seropositive patients among others. A representative sample of these topics was published in this issue in Sancti Spíritus Electronic Medical Journal.
This means will be one more way to make the scientific work of the scientists known and the researchers who day-by-day are involved in the noble but hard struggle against this virus by assuming the duty with each patient to preserve their lives.
